Alsace Alsace

The French Alsace is situated in the countries north east and borders Germany. The Alsace is 190 kilometres long and is the smallest region in France. 75% of the grapes grown in the Alsace region are from just four varieties. They are Gewurtztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Gris, with Sylvaner another 12%. Pinot Noir is also grown in the Alsace and unlike other French wine producing areas Alscae wines are usuallu labelled with the grape varieties on the label. This may be an influence from the Germans as the Alsace region has changed hands between France and Germany 4 times of the last few hundred years, the last time at the end of WWI.
